No pictures to post right now ...

... but stay tuned. I'm working on a precious little wedding cake (and corresponding groom's cake) this week. Pictures will be up by next weekend.

Also ... a friend of youngest daughter proposed marriage to me the other day after I fixed him a nice big bowl of my cake-scraps-with-icing. I had to turn him down, of course ... but darling hubby (of 25 years!) simply asked him, "How big is your dowry, dude?" Yeesh.

Hi,

I took a Wilton Class in 1989, after our youngest daughter was born. It's a wonderful class that teaches the basic mechanics of cake decorating. From that one class, I was able to create some pretty great cakes for the girls' birthdays over the years (if I do say so myself ;-))

I also bought a copy of Jane Asher's Party Cakes book, which introduced me to the exotic world of fondant. Back then, fondant was a deep mystery here in The States (Asher is in London). I made a 3-D white grand piano cake for a friend's 60th birthday ... and vowed never to use fondant again! That cake took me 3 days and a tremendous amount of fondant-clumsy anguish to make. But it was awesome.

Fast forward to 2006. Thanks to the internet and the Food Network, there is no end to the information and inspiration available to anyone who has this same weird, deep, burning passion to create delicious edible art ;-)

My recommendations for anyone who wants to get into this field:

1. It helps to be a creative, "artsy-fartsy" type person to begin with. It doesn't matter what your medium is, or how skilled you are -- you just need to have this innate desire to be 'creating something' all the time. If you loved (or longed for) a Play-Doh factory as a child, you will ADORE using fondant.

2. Take the Wilton classes. They are inexpensive, fun, and loaded with valuable inside-info, hints and tips. If you're still at the stage where a birthday cake means a box mix baked in a 9x13 pan with a can of icing spread on top ... the first Wilton class will have you looking like a professional cake decorator in 4 weeks ;-)
